Samantha Baugus

Hello! I am a teacher, scholar, book-lover, and crazy cat lady. Nice to meet you.

Samantha (she/her) has been a passionate lover of books and stories for her entire life. So, she pursued English degrees until she received a Ph.D. in English. She specifically studies science fiction and fantasy and is actively involved in that community as an editor, scholar, and fan. During her journey through academia, she discovered her love of teaching; the rest is history.

She currently teaches at Missouri State University and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, teaching literature and writing. She loves working with students, developing courses, and helping people reach their educational, professional, and personal goals.

Samantha is an active scholar, with multiple conference presentations, publications, and forthcoming publications on animals in science fiction and fantasy literature. She works often with her friend, Ayanni C. H. Cooper (https://www.ayanni.com) on the intersections of animal studies and, her specialty, monster studies.

She also reviews the many, many books she reads in a year. Check out her blog, Goodreads, Storygraph, and Instagram page linked above to follow her reading journey! Besides reading, she also enjoys spending time with her cats (Fitz, Swoosh, and Clarinet) and her husband, Jonathan. She also enjoys D&D, journaling, and jigsaw puzzles.

Feedback

I want to praise Samantha’s use of technology across a variety of platforms to help her students remain connected throughout the semester. I appreciate this perspective and approach, especially during the pandemic and switch to online learning. It has served well in creating an approachable demeanor yet at the same time students have respected the communication channel
because they value it so much. This to me is the secret to good teaching, regardless of content, being able to clearly and directly engage with students in a humanizing manner makes all the difference in a student’s educational experience.

All around I believe that Samantha Baugus is already an excellent teacher and is an asset to our
department.

Professor Baugus is the most enthusiastic and encouraging professor I had this semester. She ensured our understanding of the material and always fostered communication.

Enthusiastic, charismatic, understanding and proficient are words I would use to describe Prof Baugus. Prof Baugus was always an email away and is among the most capable at explaining english to pupils that I have encountered. I took this class expecting a completely different type of writing, and having never written in this fashion, Prof Baugus has enabled me to feel like I am progressing through my own hard work. Her essay feedback is enormous and I can’t comprehend how she does it for the entire class. Obviously she works very hard to create the course content and gives her all to help improve her student’s understanding of the material.
